Pack Like a Pro: 10 Doula Hacks for Your Hospital Bag

As doulas, we have insider knowledge about small items that can make a big difference.

You’ve probably seen a lot of hospital bag checklists. Most of them do a great job covering the basics like toiletries and baby outfits. However, there are plenty of less-obvious items that can help make your stay a lot more comfortable and a little less stressful.

As doulas, we have insider knowledge about small items that can make a big difference. Here are our recommendations, plus a free printable packing list!

Extra-Long Charging Cable

Hospital outlets are never where you need them. Your phone will likely be getting a workout on your labor day, between summoning your doula and birth team, texting updates to family, timing contractions, playing your labor playlist, and taking those first baby photos. A phone charger will be a necessity, and a longer one (we love 10-footers) means your phone will be charged and within reach at all times. Portable chargers can be great too, but we like the convenience of a long cord that you don’t have to recharge.

Stroller Fan

We’ve seen some clients bring these and we think they’re genius! We like the kind with bendable arms that conveniently wrap around the hospital bed rails. Labor hormones can have you freezing one minute, and insufferably hot the next. A fan can come in clutch during intense moments. Bonus: they’re also handy when taking summer walks with your baby!

Lip Balm

Hospital air can be very dry, and the hard work of labor can require a lot of focused breathing, leaving your lips parched. Staying hydrated can help, but lip balm is one of those tiny things that can bring major comfort. Plus, nobody wants chapped lips when they’re kissing a fresh baby.

Snacks and Drinks – For You and Your Partner!

The hospital will have some basic snacks and drinks, but it can be a comfort to bring your own beloved treats. Though it’s no longer evidence-based, hospital policy will likely want you to stick with clear liquids. We’ve had clients bring electrolyte drinks, sweetened herbal tea, and bone broth. Yum!

If you want to bring something more substantial, we suggest talking with your provider first, and then think light and easy – granola, crackers, applesauce, or fruit pouches. Don’t forget, labor can be a marathon for partners, too! Having some quick fuel like protein bars or fruit snacks can help them stay energized when you need their support the most.

Eye Mask and Earplugs

Hospitals aren’t exactly known for being particularly restful places. Even at night, there can be a lot of lights and noises from machines and other people on the floor. If you’re up all night laboring or caring for your new baby, afternoon naps can be essential. You can set yourself up for resting success by blocking out unnecessary distractions.

Swimming Trunks for Your Partner

If your birth plan includes time in the shower or tub, you may find it comforting to have your partner join you. Nobody wants to deal with soggy jeans, and your birth team will definitely appreciate your partner having something to wear in the tub. 😉

Adult Diapers

Yes, really! The hospital will have mesh undies and industrial-sized pads for you to use, but in our opinion, adult diapers provide more comfort and security. They’re super absorbent, easier to get on and off than the mesh panties, and you don’t have to worry about your pad sliding around. It’s a small swap that can make a big difference in the early postpartum days.

Cotton Balls

Aromatherapy can be a great tool to cope with the intensity of labor! However, sometimes the fragrances we loved during pregnancy don't agree with us in the delivery room. That’s where cotton balls come in – just apply your favorite essential oil blend and take a whiff whenever you want. If you end up not liking it, we can simply throw it away (like, far away).

Witch Hazel

This natural remedy is a favorite for postpartum moms. It’s especially helpful for soothing a sore or swollen perineum after its heroic journey. We’ve seen some folks bring their own homemade frozen “padsicles” made with witch hazel. If you’re not down to DIY it, there are also sprays and pre-soaked witch hazel pads available that are ready to be tossed into your bag.

Hot Packs

Hot packs can be a lifesaver to ease the aches and pains of labor. They also work to ease muscle soreness after birth. Doulas carry these because we know how useful they are! We especially love the reusable kind that click to activate instantly. They stay hot for a long time, they’re portable, and they’re easy to tuck into your go-bag.
